Dr. Zdinak is a “core”physician.”  A “core physician” is a surgeon who has been specifically trained for reconstructive and aesthetic surgical techniques immediately after graduating from medical school.  Core physicians include Plastic Surgeons, Ear, Nose, and Throat surgeons with fellowship training in facial plastic surgery, Ophthalmologists with fellowship training in oculofacial plastic surgery, and Dermatologists with fellowship training in Mohs surgery. Core surgeons devote their lives from the beginning of their surgical residency training to perfecting and innovating oculofacial reconstructive techniques.  Dr. Zdinak began operating with esteemed head and neck surgeons during her medical school training, particularly in the realm of removing cancerous lesions of the head and neck.  These types of surgeries gave her a unique opportunity to learn about and maneuver the skin, muscles, blood supply, and bones of the face, head, and neck. Many aesthetic physicians claim to have a passion for sculpting clay. Dr. Zdinak has a passion for sculpting faces.

LOYOLA UNIVERSITY STRITCH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, DIVISION OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

  • Designed and prepared a therapeutic DNA vaccine for patients with cervical cancer under the supervision of Dr. Liang Qiao. Packaged human papillomavirus-like particles with human co-stimulatory protein B7.2 DNA using in vitro gene transfer techniques.
  • Assessed vaccine integrity using western gel electrophoresis, FACS, liquid scintillation spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Evaluated vaccine efficacy using in vitro cytotoxicity assays and in vivo murine models.

MILTON S. HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER, PENN STATE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE – DIVISION OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY

  • Investigated the role of n-docosanol in preventing progressive burn ischemia using a rat burn model under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Krummel and Dr. H. Paul Ehrlich.
  • Performed relevant surgical procedures and was responsible for surgical anesthesia and post-operative care of laboratory animals. Analyzed affected areas using laser Doppler, vascular casting, and histological techniques.
  • Also researched the role of TGF-B1 in fetal wound healing using a null mutant murine model. Performed murine fetal microsurgery and prepared organ culture samples for immunohistochemical analysis. Confirmed transgene presence in fetal mice using the polymerase chain reaction.

GEORGETOWN-WASHINGTON NATIONAL EYE CENTER

  • The first project was a major review of the ophthalmic consequences of terrorist attacks in collaboration with Colonel William P. Madigan, MD, U.S. Army ophthalmology advisor to the Surgeon General.
  • The second project was with Dr. Albert S. Cytryn and involved quantitating alpha-receptors on Muller’s muscle in thyroid eye disease with the help of a specialized laboratory at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.
  • The third project was a case report of renal medullary carcinoma metastatic to the orbit in conjunction with Narieman A. Nik and Ahmed A. Hidayat of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The fourth project involved using liquid hydroxyapatite for treating enophthalmos in anophthalmic sockets. The final two projects were case reports detailing atypical presentations of lid malposition.

Thermage is the fastest, best radiofrequency skin tightening device available. Thermage penetrates deep into the collagen layer to give an immediate, noticeable improvement in the facial contour with increased skin tightening eight weeks after (we perform) the procedure and continued tightening all of the way out to six months post procedure. All of this from a forty-minute office procedure with no downtime!

“MY EXTENSIVE RESEARCH BACKGROUND INSTILLS TRUST IN THE DEVICE MANUFACTURERS SO THEY KNOW THAT WHEN THEY ASK ME TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TECHNOLOGY, I CAN PUSH IT TO A DEGREE OF CLINICAL EXCELLENCE WITH RESOLUTE SAFETY. WHEN I SAY, “NO” THEY KNOW THAT I MEAN IT.  BUT, WHEN I SAY, “YES,” OH, BABY—THAT’S WHEN THE MAGIC HAPPENS!  “

“ALL THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THAT I CONDUCTED INFORMS MY TREATMENT DECISIONS TODAY.  IT GIVES ME UNPARALLELED INSIGHT INTO HOW SOMETHING WORKS AND WHY OR WHY NOT TO COMBINE THERAPIES AND AT WHAT CRITICAL TIME POINT IN A CUSTOM MANNER FOR MY PATIENTS.”

– Dr. LISA A. ZDINAK

Thermage is a nonsurgical skin tightening procedure that is performed in the doctor’s office. Thermage uses radiofrequency energy (radiowaves) to lift and tighten the skin. Our skin is comprised of several layers, the surface layer of the skin is called the epidermis. Below the epidermis is the dermal layer, which consists of many proteins that give our skin structural support. The two main proteins are collagen, which provides tensile strength, and elastin, which lets the skin “bounce back.” When we are younger, the collagen in our skin is abundant and in a tight rope-like meshwork. As we age, sun exposure, genetics, smoking, and gravity make the collagen less abundant and it loses its organized network, and the rope begins to fray. Thermage works like a shrink wrap, using radiofrequency energy to contract the existing collagen, stimulate collagen production, and gradually tighten the skin
