Act Like a Kid
“Getting back into an activity you loved as a child will give you that feeling of being a kid again,” says Gabrielle Bernstein, author of Add More ~ing to Your Life: A Hip Guide to Happiness. “Even jumping on your bike for an afternoon ride with friends will make you feel more carefree.” (For ways to work out like a kid, turn to page 98.)
Say C, Señorita
Vitamin C is essential for your body to make collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and elastic. Lisa A. Zdinak, MD, Chief Surgeon at Precision Aesthetics in New York City, recommends that you eat five foods high in strawberries, to promote collagen production. She also suggests applying a C-rich serum such as Ultraceuticals C10 Serum or Skinceuticals Serum C AO+SPF23 (PrecisionAestheticsMD.com).
Out, Darn Spots
Cause for age spots (usually brown): the sun. Why they appear: You probably skipped using sunscreen in your 20s and 30s. Now it’s payback time. How to minimize them: Wear sunscreen with zinc oxide every day (the newest formulas blend in so that you don’t look chalky) and apply a cream with soy or licorice extract (such as Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30, $15.99). See a derm for laser treatments or prescription-strength fading creams.
Clip Those Bat Wings
Flabby upper arms can creep up on you as you age. Firm them with the Stability Ball Dumbbell Overhead Triceps Extension, as recommended by trainer Teigh McDonough, co-creator of Yoga Booty Ballet. Start: Sit on the ball holding a 3- to 5-pound dumbbell with both hands, arms extended overhead, palms facing the ceiling. Bend your elbows and lower the weight behind your head. Straighten your arms, returning to start. Do 10 to 15 reps 3 times a week.
Get Steamy
Steam your veggies! According to the new book Your Skin, Younger, eating vegetables cooked at high heat without water (think roasting, grilling, or frying) can cause inflammation, increasing the rate of aging in the body.
RELEASE CONTROL
“Anxiety and worry will make you feel older and lower your energy,” author Gabrielle Bernstein says. Try telling yourself: I accept that there are things in life I can’t control, and I release my worries.
